The silvertrail
Mining in this mountain called 'Erzgebirge', that refers to ore, started in the 13th century in
the eastern part and around 150 years later also in the western part. The most important ore in mining was without any doubt the silver. It made the region wealthy and as a sequence a lot of splendid buildings like city halls, churches were built. In addition to the silver some other ores such as iron, cooper and tin were extracted in a important extend. The working up of all the ores demanded the erection of manufactories like iron works, copper works and silver melting. After melting out the iron from the ore the further process took part in the so called hammer forges were blacksmiths were working. For their goods was a great need by the mining and other branches of business. In our days, there are a lot of reminders of the past which belong to the cultural and industrial heritage. Redecoration and renewal keep the memorials in good condition and they are worthy to be discovered. In some of them the old working processes are demonstrated. A special attraction is the 'silver road' which lead visitors to the best sights.
Ore manufactoring
This picture shows a manufacture where iron was made out of the ore. First the ore was broken into small pieces and then melted in a furnace. Water was used to broke the ore. Now the museum can be visited.
Iron manufactoring
After melting the iron out from the ore, the further process took part in a iron hammer. There the product which were needed, were forged by water powered hammers. Now there are some museums which demonstrate the manufacturing.
